More Bells and Whistles Than a Christmas Tree!
I came across this exercise bike pretty much by chance, while I was looking for other models. I probably wouldn’t have paid attention to it if it wasn’t for the fact that it bears the famous Schwinn name. Everybody knows Schwinn bikes even if they aren’t particularly interested in bicycles, or at all, for that matter. After checking the specs and user reviews, I knew I had to make room for it on this website, if not in my apartment.
Most people associate the name Schwinn with traditional outdoor bikes. I am guilty of this as well. Without any previous research on bikes, little did I know that Schwinn was making it big in the world of exercise bikes as well. Actually, now that I think of it, it makes perfect sense for them to make the transition from outdoor to indoor, with the same kind of success and appreciation for their products.
Without much further ado, let’s take a look at the Schwinn 170 Upright Bike and see what it has to offer.
Features and Specs
When I had my first look at the Schwinn 170, it didn’t just have modern upright bike written all over it – it was screaming it. There is something about that matte black finish and those sleek lines which make the Schwinn 170 so aesthetically pleasing. I know that many people are not particularly keen on the idea of owning an exercise bike simply because it wouldn’t go well with their modern living rooms and it would ruin the overall feel to it, but the Schwinn 170 is quite a beauty. In my opinion, apart from the looks, it is an indoor bike that really wants you to make the best out of your workouts.
It comes loaded with features, a whopping 29 workout programs to choose from, all of which can be adapted to your own fitness level and workout goals. These programs even include adjustments so you can maintain your heart rate. You can choose how many calories you want to burn, the distance you want to cover or how much time you want to spend working out. Once you’ve settled on a program, you can set up profiles, then save all the data onto a USB stick and upload it, since this upright bike also has a USB port available.
The resistance also aims for a high number, with 25 levels of eddy magnetic current available, so you have a lot of options to choose from in regards to how much you want to push yourself. If you are a novice, you can increase the resistance as you build your strength and stamina and if you are already an advanced user, you can start off using a more challenging level right off the bat.
The high-speed inertia perimeter weighted flywheel enhances the effectiveness of the workout by providing smooth, continuous resistance. The smoother you are pedaling, the better, because a fluid session on an exercise bike actually increases the number of calories you are burning.
The Schwinn 170 sports a contoured seat and an ergonomically placed grip, which allows your body to be in a relaxed riding position. As a matter of fact, you can also ride the bike standing up, although if you are using the difficult settings, it’s not a matter of being able to but rather a necessity.
The pedals aren’t wearing out more than they would on a traditional bike. The forearm rests are removable and the handlebars can be adjusted to your preferred angle. As you can see, the Schwinn 170 wants to make bike riding as comfortable as possible. Also worth mentioning is the 3-speed fan which will help you deal better with the heat once you break a sweat.
Acoustic Chamber Speakers
Who doesn’t like listening to music during exercise? Not only does it make the activity more pleasant altogether, but it also gives you the kick you need to be more productive when working out. The folks over at Schwinn have obviously thought about it as well, so they added a pair of acoustic chamber speakers which will are able to blast pretty decent quality sound.
There are actually two displays included: one is responsible for the statistics of the current session, while the other column shows you your progress of the goals you have set in your profile. You can actually create up to 4 user profiles so that several members of your family can track their own progress.
There are 13 fitness-related results displayed by the LCD, including your pulse, RPM, distance, time and intensity, just to mention a few. The fact that it’s backlit makes it easier to see the digits without squinting.
It was quite a challenge to dig up negative aspects of the Schwinn 170. The assembly can prove to be a bit tricky, because, instead of making clear, textual instructions, they opted to go with diagrams. That’s pretty much it though. The bike is stable, sturdy and has all the bells and whistles even for the most demanding users. I can only recommend it and direct you to Amazon where you can get it at a discount price.
